Ready for the first baby food?

Here you will find delicious and simple recipe ideas how to make the first porridge a real taste experience for your baby.

From the end of the 4th month you can theoretically start with supplementary food up to the 7th month at the latest, since your baby simply needs more nutrients from the 7th month.

But before you find numerous recipes for baby porridge, I would like to give you some information for the first porridge so that you can cook the recipes well-informed.

Which porridge comes first?

The midday porridge is usually introduced as the first baby porridge.

First, you should only start with one ingredient. Vegetables such as carrots, parsnips or pumpkin are suitable, starting with fewer spoons and then increasing them day by day. It is advisable to offer one type of vegetable for 3 days to see whether it is well tolerated. Babies are born with an innate fondness for sweets, so these sweet-tasting veggies will likely make it easier to get your child interested in new and solid foods. As mentioned above, the first porridge consists of one type of vegetable, potatoes are added in the second week and meat in the third week. As soon as you introduce meat or grains, you should mix juice into the baby food. I'll go into more detail on that later.

Bone broth is an ideal addition to complementary food from the 8th month. This contains collagen, amino acids and valuable minerals and provides your baby with an extra portion of nutrients during complementary feeding. You can prepare the bone broth yourself or simply use the organic bone broth ("organic beef") from Löwenzahn Organics.

Personally, a table or a graphic illustration gave me security and a good overview when introducing complementary food.

My personal experience with introducing complementary foods is that a baby steamer with an integrated mixer is essential for me. Especially with more than one child, where things have to be done quickly. In addition, a steam cooker protects vitamins, minerals and aromas. Fish, vegetables and fruit in particular retain their aroma, taste, color and shape. Of course you can also prepare baby porridge in a pot.

Carrot mash recipe from 5 months 1 portion:

  • 1 small carrot (about 80 g)
  • Water
  • 0.5 tsp rapeseed oil

Preparation:

  1. Peel carrots, wash and cut into small pieces.
  2. Cover the bottom of a saucepan with about 2 cm of water and add the carrots. Cover and simmer on low heat for max. 10 minutes.
  3. Puree the vegetables with the water (remove some water if there is too much water) until fine and creamy.
  4. Then add the rapeseed oil, mix well and then serve.

TIP:

If you want to stock up, you can pour the cooled porridge into an ice cube tray and freeze it. The next time you prepare porridge, simply defrost the desired amount, add approx. 1 tablespoon of rapeseed oil and heat. I've done the same thing with red meat as well. Simply pre-cooked or cooked meat, poured into the ice cube tray in portions, frozen and added to the next porridge meal. This saves a lot of time and effort (red meat takes longer to cook than vegetables).

Are you wondering why fruit juice is added to the carrot and potato mash with meat recipe ??

Fruit juice and the oil in the baby food help your baby to optimally absorb nutrients and vitamins from food. The vitamin C in the juice supports the absorption of iron from meat and grains. Your baby has built up an iron store during pregnancy, but this is gradually used up from the 6th month and breast milk, pre-milk, follow-on milk and the like no longer provide any. Therefore, the child's iron needs must be met through food.

Of course, the question arises which fruit juice is suitable?

First of all, you should make sure that the juice does not contain any added sugar . The following juices are ideal for baby porridge: orange, pear or apple juice. Some babies are sensitive to the high acidity in orange juice, alternatively you can use apple or pear juice. However, you should use one with added vitamin C. Please make sure that you do not add more than 2 to 3 tablespoons of juice containing vitamin C. And very important, if you want to freeze the baby food, then add the juice freshly after heating it up and don't freeze it. This is because the vitamin C content in the juice is sensitive to heat and presumably cannot preserve the vitamins in the porridge by heating it up.

Potato broccoli porridge recipe from 8 months approx. 2 portions:

    • 1 small potato (about 125 g)
    • 10 frozen broccoli florets (about 125 g, frozen broccoli contains the most nutrients)
    • 200ml of water
    • 1 tbsp canola oil

    Preparation:

    1. Peel potatoes, wash and cut into small pieces.
    2. Wash broccoli florets.
    3. Put the water in a saucepan, add the potatoes and the broccoli florets . Cover and simmer on low heat for max. 10 minutes.
    4. Add the rapeseed oil to the vegetables with the water (remove some water if there is too much water), puree until smooth and then serve.

    TIP:

After this meal, I advise the baby to observe whether he tolerates broccoli well. As a rule, broccoli and all types of cabbage should only be offered from the 8th month, as it can cause flatulence or abdominal pain. From the 8th month, however, the baby's digestion should be mature, if this is not the case and your baby gets stomach pains, I would offer it again a few months later.

Apple with banana puree from 5 months 1 portion:

    • 1 apple
    • 1/2 banana
    • about 30 ml of water

    Preparation :

    1. Wash, peel, core and cut the apple into small pieces.
    2. Place in a saucepan with the water and cook covered over low heat for about 9 minutes until the apple pieces are soft. Add water if necessary because the water content depends on how juicy the apple is.

How do I get carrot stains out?

Our Babybibs bibs are ideal for preventing carrot stains. If something goes wrong, you can easily remove the stains. By dampening the garment and leaving it in the sun, or dabbing the stain with lemon juice or vinegar and then using a mild bleach.

How can I supplement on the go?

The best choice for on the go are ready-made jars, so you can feed your baby without hesitation. Because the industrially produced baby food is strictly controlled and contains nothing that could harm your baby. The ready-made jars can be heated in a water bath in any restaurant or cafe. However, if you are not going to be away for long, you can warm up your baby food a little warmer than usual and fill it in a thermos mug. A plastic spoon and a baby bib should not be missing.

I hope my experiences and my recipes can help you with the introduction of complementary foods and have a supportive effect. I use all the recipes myself for my baby and also for my 3 year old daughter. I season my daughter's food and don't puree it. So I prepared a healthy and vitamin-rich meal for two children.
